How do I file taxes if I legally changed my name?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) works with the IRS to get you your tax documents. If the name on your tax return doesn’t match the SSA records, it can make it take longer for the IRS to process your tax return and send your refund.

Here’s how to tell the IRS that you recently changed your name:

1.

2.

3.

4.

Notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) about your name change. You can do so online HERE or call toll-free at 1-800-772-1213

Fill out an application for a social security card. This can be found HERE.

Submit the form by mail or by dropping it off at a SSA office near you.

That’s it! The IRS matches your name and SSN with your tax return and the SSA records.
